Mercedes wraps up the driver market: Russell and Antonelli ready to lead the Silver Arrows into Formula 1’s 2026 regulatory revolution.
Mercedes has officially confirmed its driver line-up for the 2026 Formula 1 season: George Russell and Kimi Antonelli will continue to lead the Silver Arrows into the new regulatory era. The announcement comes on the eve of the United States Grand Prix, putting an end to speculation about both drivers’ futures — especially Russell, who had been linked to rumors of tension following the reported Wolff–Verstappen talks.
Russell, who joined the Mercedes works team in 2022 after three seasons at Williams, has claimed five career victories — the latest in Singapore — and will celebrate his tenth year within the Mercedes family in 2026, including his time in the junior program.
Meanwhile, Italian rookie Kimi Antonelli has impressed in his debut F1 season, taking Sprint pole in Miami and a podium finish in Canada, becoming the third-youngest driver ever to stand on a Formula 1 podium. Despite some challenges during the European rounds, Antonelli bounced back with two top-five finishes in Baku and Singapore.
Statements of the key figures
Toto Wolff, Mercedes Team Principal, commented: “Confirming our driver line-up was only a matter of time. George and Kimi have shown great teamwork and potential, and we’re excited to continue building our future together. Our focus now is on the final six races of the season to secure P2 in the Constructors’ Championship, before turning fully to 2026 and the new regulatory era.”
George Russell said: “I’m proud to continue this journey with Mercedes. 2026 will mark my tenth year with the team, and with all the major regulation changes, it’s going to be a crucial season. We’re focused on making it a success and building on what we’ve achieved so far.”
Kimi Antonelli added: “I’ve learned a lot during my rookie season, from the highs to the tough moments. Continuing with Mercedes means having the chance to grow even more. I want to finish this year stron g and head into 2026 with confidence.”
F1 2026: only four seats left on the grid
With Mercedes confirming both Russell and Antonelli, just four seats remain open for the 2026 grid: one at Red Bull, two at Racing Bulls, and one at Alpine. And while Isack Hadjar’s spot is secure, the future of the others remains very much… uncertain.
