The German manufacturer will field two factory teams and one customer team at the debut of GEN4.
Surprise announcement from Porsche in Formula E: the German manufacturer has officially confirmed its intention to field a second factory team on the grid starting from Season 13, a season that also marks the debut of the new GEN4. This decision confirms the brand’s confidence and commitment to investing in the Formula E project, as part of an internal reorganization that also included its exit from the WEC.
Thus, for the first time in the history of the electric category, a major automotive brand will have two official teams on the grid. Nevertheless, this is not a radical novelty, as a similar approach has already been adopted by Stellantis in recent seasons, albeit in a different way: the group involves two distinct brands, DS and Citroën as of this season, which rely on external structures with prior experience in Formula E, namely Penske and MSG.
Porsche’s intention is to also have a customer team on the grid, thus keeping the total number of Porsche cars on track at six, even though two will race under a team different from the factory outfit. The main candidate to be the customer team is Cupra Kiro, which will continue the partnership started in 2024, a collaboration that has already led the young American team to achieve remarkable results, including its first pole position and, most importantly, its first victory secured by Dan Ticktum.
This will therefore bring an end to the partnership with the Andretti team, which began in 2022 and culminated in a Drivers’ Championship won by Jake Dennis. The American team will likely strike a deal with Nissan for the supply of powertrains, as the Japanese manufacturer lost its collaboration with NEOM McLaren starting this season.
Porsche doubles up: the words of Thomas Laudenbach and Jeff Dodds
On Monday, Thomas Laudenbach, Vice President of Porsche Motorsport, stated: “Motorsport shapes our brand. Our heritage in traditional motorsport is unique and is reflected in every Porsche. In the future, we want to be able to say the same about electric motorsport. Compared to other racing series, Formula E offers
“In managing the additional cars, we want to create the highest possible degree of independence and not simply expand our existing presence. Next year marks 75 years of Porsche Motorsport – a success story that will, in the future, be enriched by a wide variety of experiences in electric motorsport.”
Alongside his statements are those of Jeff Dodds, CEO of Formula E: “Porsche’s commitment to acquiring an additional license starting from Season 13 (2026/27) of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship demonstrates the significant strength of our series and its dedication to innovation and electrification at the highest level of motorsport.“
“Porsche has been an important part of the Formula E family since 2019, during which time it has successfully secured Teams’, Constructors’, and Drivers’ World Championships. It is a proven example of success in transferring technology from the track to the road, with road cars featuring innovations developed directly in Formula E. With the significant performance advancements planned for the GEN4 cars, the grid for the 2026/27 season already looks very competitive.”
