A lot happening this pre-Qatar week, but the focus is on the 2026 calendar, with the Madrid Grand Prix in jeopardy…
After yesterday’s RMC Motori report with Paolo Ciccarone, the F1 world is waiting for news. The twist could be huge: the new 2026 circuit, the Madring, might seriously be at risk of being canceled.
While it was known that, amid controversies and delays, the situation in Madrid wasn’t ideal, there are now talks of “Liberty Media looking for a replacement GP for 2026,” with Imola reportedly in a strong position.
And the Madrid mayor has spoken to calm down the noises.
Madrid mayor speaks: “Circuit ahead of schedule”
Specifically, Mayor Almeida told Europa Press: “I don’t know where this news comes from, but the circuit is ahead of schedule for its planned completion and is proceeding perfectly.”
“The sponsors are there, the circuit is under construction, so I’m sorry, but on September 12 next year there will be Formula 1 in Madrid, and it will be a real success.”
However, Spanish journalist Fonsi Loaiza, known for covering systemic problems in Spain and social investigations, added on social media:
“Formula 1 is considering suspending the Madrid Grand Prix due to delays. This contract was awarded by Ayuso to Acciona, of the Francoist Entrecanales family, a key company in corruption cases linked to the Santos Cerdán network, for a total of €83 million of public money.”
The situation is therefore hanging by a thread: looking at the images, it seems highly unlikely that a circuit can be completed in seven months under the current conditions (the delivery date is set for June 2026). But as always in F1, never say never.
Imola doesn’t follow the rumors: working hard to become a global reference
It’s important to note that this situation concerns only the future Madrid track. While Imola is a strong candidate to replace it, in Romagna the focus remains fully on infrastructure upgrades and future projects.
The Italian venue’s approach is clear: work nonstop to improve facilities (already top-level after recent upgrades) without paying attention to external rumors and speculation. Total focus on in-house work.
At the same time, Imola is ready both to negotiate a renewal with F1 (including potential rotation) and to host a GP at short notice, at any time of the year.
