Surprise move from the Silverstone team: Adrian Newey becomes Team Principal!
A shocking twist (and top-level reshuffle) at Aston Martin: the British team has announced a redesign of its leadership. Andy Cowell will step down as CEO and Team Principal to become Chief Strategy Officer, while Adrian Newey will take the helm as the new Team Principal.
Newey as TP: what changes at Aston Martin
Cowell, who has led Aston Martin over the past 14 months “through the transition to works team status,” will remain central to technical strategies. “My role will be to optimize partnerships with Honda, Aramco, and Valvoline, and ensure seamless integration of the new power unit, fuel, and chassis,” Cowell explained. His engine expertise will therefore be crucial to maximize synergy between the team and its strategic partners (Honda above all).
Newey’s role as Team Principal, on the other hand, “combines his technical and creative expertise with direct management of the team on track.” The British genius commented: “Over the past nine months, I’ve seen incredible talent within the team. Now I can guide them to perform at their best for the 2026 season, with Aston Martin fully operational as a works team and the new regulations radically changing the competitive landscape.”
Lawrence Stroll, Executive Chairman, also emphasized that the decision was made to leverage the strengths of both: “Andy has built a world-class team and created a culture focused on the race car. Adrian will bring all his technical and creative expertise to team leadership. These changes will allow us to play to our strengths at the highest level in the next season.”
