Startling remarks from GPDA President Alexander Wurz, who warns that the Mercedes Power Unit situation could be the defining factor of the season

A new day brings a wave of updates. With only a few weeks remaining before the season opener in Australia—scheduled for the weekend of March 6–8—Formula 1 is bracing for the long-awaited 2026 revolution, fueled by the insights and warnings of its key protagonists.

Wurz Alerts Fans: “The Mercedes Case? We’re Talking 10-15 Horsepower”

The past few months have been filled with a barrage of statements and endless rumors regarding which team will emerge as the favorite for the World Title.

At the heart of this debate is the Power Unit. The 2026 engines are defined by the delicate pursuit of balance between thermal and electric power. Mercedes is widely rumored to be the frontrunner in this development race, a position that has not come without its fair share of controversy.

The Warning on Mercedes and 2026 Projections

Regarding the Mercedes PU debate that has recently dominated headlines, Alexander Wurz, President of the GPDA (Grand Prix Drivers’ Association), offered a sobering perspective: “The Mercedes case? We are talking about a gap of 10-15 horsepower, which translates to three or four-tenths of a second per lap.”

A Decisive Advantage: “The First Half of the Season Will Be Fascinating

Wurz suggests that such a technical disparity could render driver skill secondary: “Even a top-tier driver couldn’t beat a mediocre one if the gap is truly that large. This could decide the World Championship before it even begins.”

These remarks have sent ripples through the paddock, serving as a warning to those tasked with challenging the sheer power of the Brackley-built engine. However, speaking to Kronen Zeitung, the Austrian also noted the unpredictability of the new regulations: “We could see truly incredible scenarios; it might be possible to gain more than a second across various corners and sectors“.

Wurz concluded by highlighting the learning curve of the new era: “The first half of the season, in particular, could be extremely interesting as teams grapple with the new energy management systems”.
