Binotto confirms Wheatley’s sudden departure for personal reasons: he will lead the team on an interim basis, but Audi is already working to find a replacement

On the sidelines of the Suzuka weekend, Mattia Binotto spoke openly for the first time about Jonathan Wheatley’s sudden departure from his role as team principal of the Audi project. The former Ferrari executive described the split as “very sudden and unexpected,” coming after the German team had competed in just two Formula 1 Grand Prix races.

Binotto’s words

In an interview with Formula 1, Binotto explained the reasons behind Wheatley’s decision to step down: “He spoke with our CEO and the board, stating that he could not commit to the role long-term for personal reasons on which we cannot pass judgment or comment.

Audi has therefore decided to terminate its relationship with the former Red Bull representative effective immediately: “Since he could not guarantee continuity, we felt it was appropriate to relieve him of his duties.”

Wheatley’s departure now calls for an internal reorganization. During this transition period, Binotto himself will temporarily assume the operational duties of Team Principal, pending the appointment of a replacement: ” Given the role he held, we need to fill the void. I can’t keep taking on more responsibilities: my main focus remains the factory, where we develop the car and the power unit “.
