From tragedy to challenge: today Sylvain Guintoli will push his limits in memory of his son.
We often see them as strong, fearless, almost invincible — but beneath the helmets and racing suits are deeply human stories. One of the strongest hearts in motorsport belongs to Sylvain Guintoli, who in 2025 faced a loss no parent should ever endure.
Who is Sylvain Guintoli
For those who may not know him, Sylvain Guintoli is best known for winning the 2014 Superbike World Championship with Aprilia, taking the title from Tom Sykes. A highly technical and consistent rider, he raced for top manufacturers and became one of the most respected figures in the paddock.
After his MotoGP experience, he played a key role in developing the Suzuki GSX-RR, contributing to Joan Mir’s 2020 world title. At the same time, he built a strong legacy in endurance racing, winning the Endurance World Championship (EWC) in 2021 and iconic races like the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
The family tragedy and Luca’s memory
On July 30 last year, the Guintoli family shared the heartbreaking news of the passing of little Luca, who died at just six years old after a long battle with cancer — a fight that touched the entire motorsport community.
A few months later, in November, the former MotoGP rider and SBK world champion decided to honor his son in a unique way: running the London Marathon wearing his motorcycle suit, with the goal of raising funds for charities supporting children with cancer.
He won’t be alone. Running alongside Sylvain are his daughters, Alicia and Layla, aged 20 and 18. The marathon takes place today, covering 44.2 km through the streets of London — a demanding challenge, made even tougher by spring temperatures. A powerful gesture, driven by memory, resilience, and purpose.
