A good qualifying for Lewis Hamilton, who finished fifth after flirting with the possibility of a front row start.
It was a decidedly positive Friday for Lewis Hamilton, with the Ferrari driver finishing fifth in Sprint Qualifying, flirting with the possibility of a front row start as well. A mistake on his second attempt at SQ3 cost the Brit a few hundredths of a second that could have earned him a better finish, perhaps ahead of the two McLarens. So far, however, the signs are positive, but the significant engine deficit remains.
. This is the seven-time world champion’s comment: “This was probably the best qualifying session we’ve had in a long time; we did a great job with the engineers, we made some setup changes that made me feel great, and then we made a few other small changes for qualifying. Q1 and Q2 went quite well.
I don’t know why, maybe the others are revving their engines a little more. Anyway, I’m happy to be there fighting and I had a lot of fun on the track today. Also, I think that not having worked in the simulator, I felt better than at any other weekend this year. Maybe that’s the path we need to take this year.” .
Lewis then added: “We’ve worked really hard; we’ve analyzed the data from the last few weeks, and I’ve found this much more useful and has brought us many more benefits. I’ve also found that we’ve optimized the car’s stability and mechanical balance by choosing a setup we’ve never used before. I think this has transformed the car, so I hope this also bodes well for the coming weekends.”
