Two serious accidents in the first historic stage of the WorldWCR at Misano: Mia Rusthen in an induced coma, Jessica Howden returns to the paddock…

The adventure of the WorldWCR, the motorcycle category reserved for women, did not start in the best way. During the Superbike weekend at Misano, dominated in the men’s category by Toprak Razgatlıoğlu,, the first race in the history of this new category took place: however, the outcome was not as hoped.as, despite Maria Herrera’s last-lap victory over Ana Carrasco, the race made headlines worldwide for a very different reason.

During the fifth lap of the race, at Misano-2 (the sixteenth and final corner of the Misano World Circuit named after Marco Simoncelli), under circumstances that are still unclear, the 21-year-old Norwegian Mia Rusthen suffered a head injury and a concussion. Immediate circuit medical assistance was provided: Rusthen sustained multiple traumas and was initially treated on-site before being transferred by helicopter to Maurizio Bufalini Hospital in Cesena, where she underwent surgery overnight.

The Rusthen family’s statement

“Mia is currently in an induced coma. She underwent surgery to relieve pressure on her head and stop the bleeding. The doctors are optimistic and pleased with the outcome of the surgery: her vital signs and brain pressure are stable. We appreciate the thoughts and messages of affection sent to Mia. This means everything to us right now, even though she’s the toughest woman in the world!”

Accident also for Jessica Howden: she is doing better.

Jessica Howden, from Team Trasimeno, didn’t fare well either: she crashed at the first corner in Race 2, also suffering a concussion, and prompt intervention by the marshals was crucial. The South African, who remained conscious throughout, was also transported to Cesena Hospital, where more reassuring news has since emerged.
