Hanno fatto particolare rumore le parole di Carlo Vanzini su Verstappen: “Una macchina, il più forte ma anche il più inutile. Ma non fraintendetemi…”
There was a lot of noise about the voice of Formula 1: Carlo Vanzini, the historic commentator of Sky Sport F1, was criticized by some for placing Dutch driver Max Verstappen in the sixth position of his personal ranking of Formula 1 drivers. Misunderstood by many (the ranking was based on the emotions Vanzini felt, not purely on skills), his words about the current world champion caused a stir, as he described him as both “the strongest” and “probably the one who would be missed the least,” despite his top spot in the rankings.

A statement to be read between the lines: the commentator probably intended to talk about his lack of charisma and coldness in front of the cameras, a phrase that was not understood by some viewers.
This is what Carlo Vanzini said during an episode of the Gurulandia podcast, while compiling the ranking of the most “exciting” drivers for him: “I put Max Verstappen in sixth place. He is a machine: they were setting up his stroller from when he was little… (laughs, ed.). I put Verstappen sixth because he is probably the strongest World Champion among those I have seen race, but also, let me put it this way, the most useless. In what sense? If he were to retire tomorrow, few would miss him, because there is something inhuman about his superiority. Moreover, he is not a particularly charismatic character.”
Still Carlo Vanzini on Verstappen: “I reiterate, he is number one for consistency among all those I have seen race. He was programmed and raised to be a Formula 1 Champion since he was a kid, but since this ranking is based on what is conveyed to me, I put him in sixth place. I would put him in first place as a driver in itself, but sixth for what he conveys to me.”
