Wolves on Colapinto: “I want to give him a seat for 2025”

In Baku, Williams achieved their best result in the last three years, partly due to the performance of Alexander Albon’s new teammate. Here’s what James Wolves said about Colapinto.

When Logan Sargeant’s departure from Williams was announced, the entire Formula 1 circus was eager to see Franco Colapinto in action. We can say that, at the moment, the expectations seem to have been more than met; the Argentine driver’s performance in Baku was widely discussed after he scored points in his second weekend in the top category, becoming a key part of Williams’ best result since mid-2021.

However, starting in 2025, Franco Colapinto will need to vacate his seat for Carlos Sainz. Nevertheless, Williams’ team principal is keen to keep the Argentine driver in Formula 1, and Colapinto’s name could be added to the list of candidates for the only remaining seat in the 2025 lineup—namely, the one at Sauber alongside Nico Hulkenberg.

At the end of the Baku weekend, as reported by Formule1.nl, James Wolves discussed Franco Colapinto’s future, not hiding his pride in the Argentine driver. He expressed his strong determination to find Colapinto a concrete opportunity that could continue from this second part of the Formula 1 season. However, Wolves remains convinced of the Albon-Sainz pairing for the upcoming year.

Of course, he will remain part of the Williams family, but I also hope he can continue to race somewhere. I want to give Colapinto a seat for 2025, ideally in Formula 1. Realistically, there is only one team left available. (referring to Sauber) We’ll see what we can achieve in this regard. In just two races, Colapinto has proven he deserves a spot in Formula 1. We’ll see what the possibilities are with Audi and if we can find a way to collaborate. I think Albon and Sainz are still the right combination for Williams as we continue to grow and fight for the title. However, I am incredibly proud of what Franco (Colapinto) has achieved.” said Wolves about Colapinto.

Franco Colapinto celebrates his first points in Formula 1

Franco Colapinto is the first Argentine driver to score points in Formula 1 after a gap of 42 years; the last was Carlos Reutemann, who was active until 1982. Number 43 thanked the Grove team, highlighting their recent efforts: “Scoring my first points in Formula 1 is an amazing feeling. I am so proud of this team for what we have already achieved together. I’m happy to have points on the board as a testament to all the hard work and commitment we are putting in, especially since it’s only my second race. We had a good pace today, being very close to Aston..

Finishing seventh and eighth alongside Alex means that we are now P8 in the Constructors’ Championship, which is a good step forward and a motivation for the team. We still need to keep learning and improving together, as it’s a long season with many races remaining. I’m looking forward to racing in Singapore for the first time next weekend,” continued Colapinto, expressing his excitement for the upcoming races alongside Alexander Albon.
