Mick Schumacher and Mercedes part ways: at the end of 2024, the Brackley team will change its reserve driver.

It’s now official: Mick Schumacher will leave Mercedes at the end of 2024. The son of the legendary Michael Schumacher has served as the Brackley team’s reserve driver, but the German seems determined to focus on returning to competitive racing. By stepping away from the third driver role, Mercedes could now welcome back Valtteri Bottas, who appears increasingly likely to return “home.”

Statements of the key figures

Toto Wolff, CEO & Team Principal of the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team, stated on the team’s official website: “Mick’s hard work, dedication, and determination in his role as reserve driver have been vital for the team over the past two years. From his simulator work to testing various cars and supporting the trackside team, we couldn’t have asked for more from him. From day one, he seamlessly integrated into the team and has become a highly valued colleague for everyone in Brackley and Brixworth.”

“However, Mick is first and foremost a racing driver. We’ve seen both during his time in F1 and this year in the World Endurance Championship that he is a racer of exceptional talent, deserving of competing in the best championships. As he embarks on his next challenge, I would like to personally thank Mick for his contribution to our team and wish him all the best for his future.”

Mick also expressed his gratitude toward the team: “I am grateful to Toto and the entire Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team for all I have learned over these two years. They have undoubtedly made me a more experienced racing driver, as I gained a deeper understanding of the engineering side. However, watching these cars race without being behind the wheel myself has been tough. I want to return to focusing 100% on competition and fully dedicate myself to the sporting side of motorsport. Ultimately, racing is what every driver lives for—it’s what gives you that feeling you love.”
