Helmut Marko delivers a harsh critique of Andretti’s entry into F1, specifically targeting the financial terms of the team’s inclusion in the sport through a $450 million payment.
The announcement of Cadillac-Andretti joining F1 has already made waves within the paddock. Amid skepticism, concerns, and perhaps even excitement about change, the 2026 entry of an eleventh team has been met with considerable caution—particularly due to the manner in which it is entering the sport.
We previously reported the substantial $450 million fee Andretti paid to secure its 2026 entry—a figure $250 million higher than the standard $200 million entry fee required of all teams. This extraordinary payment has raised eyebrows and prompted confusion among F1 stakeholders. As the Qatar Grand Prix approaches, many key figures in the sport have started to voice their opinions on the matter.
Marko’s words on Andretti in F1
Helmut Marko, the Austrian Red Bull executive, was the first to weigh in, delivering a scathing critique of the American team. Known for his bold and often controversial statements (even against his own drivers, such as Sergio Perez), Marko did not hold back:
“The payment Cadillac is making doesn’t even come close to compensating for the significant investments we’ve made over the past ten years“.
Marko’s stance follows earlier comments made in February 2023 by both himself and Christian Horner when Andretti’s potential entry was first being discussed. At the time, both expressed conditional support, emphasizing the need for solid financial backing. As Marko noted: “As Christian said, neither Red Bull nor I have any issue with Andretti Racing or Cadillac entering the sport. However, the financial stability of their foundation must be guaranteed“.
Nonetheless, speaking to OE24, Marko also acknowledged the positive impact a brand like Cadillac could have on the sport, stating: “A name like Cadillac, backed by General Motors, will undoubtedly add value to F1“.
