The Official Announcement

Here is the official statement from Sauber’s website: “Audi and Qatar Investment Authority (QIA) are joining forces to accelerate preparations for the Four Rings’ entry into Formula 1 in 2026. QIA, the sovereign wealth fund of the State of Qatar, has signed definitive agreements to acquire a significant minority stake in Sauber Holding AG, the future Audi works team.

This strategic investment will see QIA join the Audi Formula 1 project as a long-term investor and partner.

QIA’s investment will provide substantial capital infusion and pave the way for infrastructure expansion and team development, positioning the team for long-term success in Formula 1. The investment aligns with QIA’s focus on opportunities with long-term growth potential. Formula 1 is a rapidly growing sport with significant upside potential through continued global expansion, deeper fan engagement, and substantial commercialization opportunities.

Audi will officially enter Formula 1 as a works team with the technical regulation changes in 2026. Both Neuburg and Hinwil facilities are being further upgraded to meet the necessary standards for success.

With the recent announcement of Gabriel Bortoleto racing alongside Nico Hülkenberg, the program has taken another important step forward. The announcement of Sauber’s full acquisition in March and the appointments of Mattia Binotto as CTO and COO of the project and Jonathan Wheatley as team principal starting mid-next year demonstrate Audi’s determination. This investment adds to a series of significant milestones for the future.”

Gernot Döllner, CEO of AUDI AG and Chairman of Sauber Motorsport AG, commented: “QIA’s investment reflects the confidence that the Audi F1 Project has already garnered, underlining Audi’s ongoing commitment to the initiative. This additional capital will accelerate the team’s growth and is another milestone in our long-term strategy. QIA’s involvement further stimulates dedicated efforts at both the Hinwil and Neuburg facilities as we work towards Audi’s entry in 2026.”

Mohammed Al-Sowaidi, CEO of QIA, stated: “Audi is a premium partner of choice with a rich automotive heritage. As a long-standing investor in the Volkswagen Group, we believe in Audi’s vision and direction as they enter Formula 1, and our investment will support the realization of this goal. QIA sees Formula 1 as a sport with significant untapped investment potential. The increasing commercialization of professional sports as a global entertainment offering and Formula 1’s growing worldwide popularity have created an exciting opportunity for our first major motorsport investment.”

The statement concluded by noting: “The transaction is subject to customary regulatory approvals.”
