George Russell, president of the Drivers’ Association, has once again addressed the issue of the FIA’s management under Ben Sulayem.
At the end of the recently concluded season, drivers and the FIA found themselves at odds for a variety of reasons. The creation of the GPDA and the subsequent letter posted on social media in November provoked strong and controversial reactions from Ben Sulayem, president of the FIA.
George Russell, head of the Drivers’ Association, once again emphasized the intentions of the GPDA group, expressing concerns about the actions and recent statements of the FIA president. Russell said: “I really don’t know what’s going through his mind, but as we said the last time we had a discussion about it, I asked him what his next move would be.”
The Mercedes driver then added: “I didn’t expect it to be something that, two weeks later, seems to have become quite serious. I really don’t know what this change means in terms of governance regarding compliance. I don’t even know exactly what it is, but it seems like quite an important matter.”
And finally: “I was quite surprised by the fact that it was said that two weeks later there would be something else. What is it? Where are we? Where is the final point? I think it would be great for all of us to understand what the FIA’s objective is. And I think it would also be great for us to understand if the president could tell us what his goal with the FIA is, and maybe we could see it from his perspective; perhaps we would have a greater understanding.”
