Keep Fighting, Michael Schumacher: The Memory of the Red Baron

by Letizia Ganci

It has been 11 years since that tragic accident that radically changed the course of history for Michael Schumacher’s family; yet, even today, his memory remains on the lips of the most passionate fans.

Some stories cannot stop being told, again and again – stories passed down from parents to children, grandparents or uncles to grandchildren – tales that ignite passions in those who listen, while leaving those who tell them with misty eyes, keeping in their hearts an aura of happy memories. This is even more true for Ferrari fans. This is the story of Michael Schumacher, a name among the giants of Formula 1, which needs no introduction, a story that is not yet finished, but one that carries with it a question: how would things have turned out if they had been different on that fateful Sunday in December 11 years ago?

It almost seems like an automatic reflex to ask this question when faced with something that seems unjust, wrong – something one wishes had a different outcome. A story that perhaps ended too soon, and that, despite his second retirement from the sport in 2012, could have continued in different forms.

The “Red Baron” was the first Formula 1 champion to wave the German flag, a success that came in a year of great significance for the history of motorsport: 19941994, the year of the tragic accident of Ayrton Senna, which took place during the third Grand Prix of the season. From the early laps, Senna had been battling Schumacher who had won the previous races in Brazil and Japan, to maintain the lead in the Imola race. Unfortunately, Senna’s victory would never come, and Schumacher would take his third win of the season, a success he would later reflect on with an absent look in his eyes.

That World Championship was followed by another six for Michael Schumacher, five of which he won with the historic Scuderia Ferrari, which had returned to the top of the standings thanks to the efforts of the “Kaiser.”

“I’m not a legend. I’m just a lucky person who was in the right place at the right time ,” Michael Schumacher once said about himself. Yet, years later, the talent of the German driver, born into a modest family in Hürth, remains indisputable, with numerous records that still speak for him, many of which remain unbeaten.

December 29, 2013: 11 Years Since Michael Schumacher’s Accident That Shocked the Formula 1 World (and Beyond)

For the Schumacher family, Sunday, December 29, 2013, seemed like a typical winter day in the French Alps of Méribel. However, fate – if we can call it that – had other plans. Just after 11 AM, something happened that would add a tragic chapter to the history of motorsport, as well as to the history of the German family: Michael Schumacher, the seven-time World Champion who brought Scuderia Ferrari back to the top of Formula 1, became the victim of a severe accident while skiing, crashing violently into a rock off-piste.

The Kaiser was immediately airlifted to Moutiers and then, almost two hours later, to the hospital in Grenoble, which is more specialized in treating head injuries. Despite the medical intervention, his condition was critical, and there was no doubt about the severity of the situation.

As news spread through the media, the entire world seemed to stop. The outpouring of support from Formula 1 drivers such as Sebastian Vettel and Fernando Alonso, as well as from other athletes like Valentino Rossi and Alessandro Del Piero, was overwhelming. They posted messages of solidarity on their social media channels. Since that incident, the Schumacher family has fiercely protected, but above all respected, the privacy of Michael’s condition. To this day, there are no definitive updates on the former driver’s condition.

I’ve always believed that you should never, ever give up, and that you should always keep fighting, even when there’s only the slightest chance.”
