The Belgian Grand Prix has renewed its commitment to Spa-Francorchamps until 2031, with the return of the Sprint Race in 2025.
Today, January 8, the official confirmation has arrived regarding the renewal of the event at the legendary Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, famous for its iconic Eau Rouge and Raidillon sections. The Belgian Grand Prix will feature on the calendar for four of the next six editions, specifically in the 2026, 2027, 2029, and 2031 seasons.
As a result, the Belgian circuit will not appear on the Formula 1 calendar in 2028 and 2030, presumably making way for Max Verstappen’s home race at the Zandvoort circuit—confirming the previously speculated idea of alternating venues in an era where more and more countries are eager to host the top tier of motorsport. As for 2025, the race weekend in the Ardennes will take place from July 25 to 27, featuring the return of the Sprint Race.
This extension follows significant investments in the circuit over recent years, including the addition of two new grandstands, increasing seating capacity by 10,000, as well as improvements to off-track entertainment and fan experience.
Built in 1921, Spa-Francorchamps was one of the seven circuits that formed part of the inaugural Formula 1 championship in 1950, and since then, it has hosted 57 Grand Prix events. At 7.004 km, it is the longest circuit on the Formula 1 calendar and has seen legendary drivers such as Ayrton Senna, Michael Schumacher, Niki Lauda, and Sebastian Vettel claim victory. Among current drivers, Lewis Hamilton, Charles Leclerc, and Max Verstappen have also won at this track.
Statements from the Formula 1 CEO on the Belgian Grand Prix Renewal
Stefano Domenicali, President and CEO of Formula 1, commented: “The Belgian Grand Prix has been one of the races that made up our inaugural championship in 1950, so as we begin our 75th year, it is only fitting that we announce this important extension. Spa-Francorchamps is rightfully praised by drivers and fans as one of the best tracks in the world and has hosted some incredible moments over its many seasons in Formula 1. In recent years, significant work has been done to improve the infrastructure and the overall fan experience, and I would like to pay tribute to the promoter and the Walloon Government for their commitment and passionate support of Formula 1 in Belgium “.
Melchior Wathelet, President of Spa Grand Prix, and Vanessa Maes, CEO of Spa Grand Prix, added: “We are both very proud of this renewal, which reflects the mutual trust built while we updated our infrastructure and achieved a record-breaking audience and fantastic fan experience in recent years. This contract extension has once again been made possible thanks to the support of the Walloon Government, but also thanks to the fans of what we believe is the most beautiful circuit in the world. Together, we are strengthening our commitment to the development of our wonderful region “.
