Carlos Sainz becomes the new GPDA director, joining George Russell

New role for Carlos Sainz in Formula 1. The Spanish driver will take over from Sebastian Vettel as director of the GPDA. The announcement was made on social media.

Starting from this Formula 1 season, which will see him debut with Williams, the Madrid-born driver will take on a new and important role within the top-tier motorsport category: director of the Grand Prix Drivers’ Association.

On the morning of February 23, the appointment of number 55 was officially announced. Taking over from Sebastian Vettel, he will now lead the GPDA alongside Mercedes driver George Russell. The latter had previously pushed for the creation of a social media page, allowing drivers to voice their opinions clearly and directly, especially during a time when the relationship between Formula 1 drivers and the FIA remains tense.

I am passionate about my sport and believe that we drivers have a responsibility to do everything we can to collaborate with stakeholders in advancing the sport in many aspects. That’s why I’m very happy and proud to do my part by taking on the role of GPDA Director ,” said Carlos Sainz regarding his new position in the category.

GPDA President Alex Wurz welcomed the Williams driver: “He has been an active and engaged member of the GPDA for several years, and we sincerely appreciate his commitment in stepping up to this vital role.”

What is the GPDA?

The Grand Prix Drivers’ Association is an organization representing active Formula 1 drivers, with the primary goal of ensuring and improving safety standards within the top-tier category. The association is chaired by former driver Alex Wurz and directed by George Russell, now joined by Carlos Sainz, who takes over the role previously held by Sebastian Vettel. The GPDA also includes legal advisor Anastasia Fowle.
