Here is the guide to the new Formula 2 season, which will start this weekend!
This weekend, in addition to marking the start of the highly anticipated new Formula 1 season, will also see the launch of the ninth edition of the Formula 2 Championship at the Melbourne circuit in Australia.
In the 2024 season, marked by the debut of the new generation of cars, which has been confirmed for 2025 as well, the title fight was surprisingly between Gabriel Bortoleto, who went on to become champion, and Isack Hadjar—both now in Formula 1—despite not being the favorites at the start.

In addition to Bortoleto and Hadjar, last season’s drivers Andrea Kimi Antonelli and Ollie Bearman have also made the jump to Formula 1, joining Mercedes and Haas, respectively. Meanwhile, Paul Aron, who finished third in 2024, will focus full-time on his role as Alpine’s reserve driver, as well as Franco Colapinto, who was a standout in the first part of the previous season.
In addition to these drivers who will make their way to Formula 1, others have left the series to pursue alternative paths: this is the case of Zane Maloney and Taylor Barnard, who are making a name for themselves in Formula E, Dennis Hauger, who will relaunch his career in the United States in the Indy NXT championship, and Zak O’Sullivan, who will compete in Super Formula in Japan.
As for the 2025 season grid, Andrea Kimi Antonelli will pass the baton to two very young Italian talents, Leonardo Fornaroli and Gabriele Minì. The two engaged in a fantastic duel for the Formula 3 Championship and will surely be key players in this Formula 2 season.
Fornaroli will be at the wheel of the Invicta #1, chosen as the heir to Bortoleto in an attempt to win both the Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championships once again, and will be joined by the young Czech driver Roman Stanek, after a two-year stint with Trident.
Instead, Minì will be at the wheel of the Prema, after already participating in the 2024 Baku event, where he secured a third place in the Sprint Race. The other seat in the Grisignano di Zocco team is held by Sebastian Montoya, son of Juan Pablo, who makes the step up to the category after two seasons in Formula 3, where he showed good speed but had limitations in race management.
However, the driver who is certainly favored is Victor Martins: the French driver was one of the last to be confirmed on the grid and will take part in his third season in the category with the ART team.
The French driver, no longer a member of the Alpine Academy, after a great debut season in 2023 and a difficult start in 2024, partially redeemed by a strong finish, will try to win the Championship on his third opportunity, just as Felipe Drugovich and Theo Pourchaire did before him. Martins will be joined by Ritomo Miyata, who is looking for redemption after a disappointing debut season in Formula 2 with the Rodin team.
After being one of the surprises of the past championship, Campos continues its collaboration with the Red Bull Junior Team. Pepe Martí has been confirmed by the Spanish team after a challenging debut season, although it ended with a victory in the Abu Dhabi Sprint Race.
The young Spanish driver, supported by Fernando Alonso, will be joined by the brightest talent from the Red Bull Academy, Arvid Lindblad. The 2007-born English driver, supported by Helmut Marko, won the Formula Regional Oceania in the early months of 2025 and has already tested the 2023 Racing Bulls car at the Imola circuit. He is expected to make his debut in the FP1 sessions when he turns 18 on August 8th of this year.
The line-up of the Hitech team is also very interesting, as it promotes two very fast young drivers from Formula 3, Luke Browning and Dino Beganovic. Both made their Formula 2 debuts at the end of the past season, and in particular, the Swedish driver from the Ferrari Driver Academy was incredibly fast, even securing a podium in the Abu Dhabi Sprint Race.
The MP Motorsport team has confirmed its line-up of the end of the 2024 season, with Oliver Goethe and Richard Verschoor, who is in his fifth season in the category. The DAMS team has also confirmed American driver Jak Crawford, a member of the Aston Martin junior program, and has signed Indian driver Kush Maini from the Invicta team.
The Rodin team, on the other hand, had to come to terms with Christian Mansell’s withdrawal from the competition just ten days before the start and replaced him with Amaury Cordeel, who had initially been left without a seat after the previous season with Hitech. The Belgian driver will be joined by the young Irishman Alex Dunne, a member of the McLaren junior program, and already a reserve driver in Formula E for the Papaya team.
After a surprising debut season, Joshua Durksen has been confirmed by the AIX Racing team and is poised to be a key player in 2025. The Paraguayan driver will be joined by Cian Shields, coming from Formula 3.
The Trident team relies on two rookies coming from Formula 3: Sami Meguetounif and Max Esterson. Finally, the Van Amersfoort team bids farewell to Enzo Fittipaldi, who has moved to Endurance, making way for the pairing of John Bennett and Rafael Villagomez.
