A change of plans at Yamaha: it will no longer be Augusto Fernandez replacing the six-time world champion. Here’s why. Here’s why
The WorldSBK heads to Portugal for the second round of the MotoGP season, following the debut at Phillip Island. Among the riders who will take to the track in Portimão, there will be a new face in the Yamaha camp: Jason O’Halloran, who will replace Jonathan Rea.

The Northern Irish rider was injured in his left foot during pre-season testing in Australia, which caused him to miss the opening race.
Initially, Yamaha had decided to call up Augusto Fernandez, former MotoGP rider and current test rider for the Japanese manufacturer. However, there has been a change of plans: the Spaniard has been called up to replace Oliveira in the premier class of the MotoGP, which will take place the same weekend in Austin.
Priority went to the Pramac team, which will line up Fernandez on the starting grid, while the Pata Maxus Yamaha team opted for Jason O’Halloran.
Jason O’Halloran’s Words
The Australian rider said: “I’m excited to have the opportunity to race for the Pata Maxus Yamaha team in Portimão while Jonathan continues to recover. I really enjoyed getting back on the R1 during pre-season testing with YART; it’s a bike I’ve always felt comfortable on, and I’ve had a lot of success with the R1 in BSB, so to try it in its full version for WorldSBK is something I’m really looking forward to.
Of course, facing a race weekend without having tested is a bit like diving into deep water, but I’ll do my best for the team and Yamaha, also keeping in mind that the EWC season starts in just a few weeks! I’d like to thank Yamaha and the team for the opportunity and wish Jonathan a speedy recovery.”
