Few doubts remain about the Madrid Grand Prix taking place next year, with construction set to begin in the Spanish capital this May.
The Madrid Grand Prix will take place in 2026, and at this point, there is little uncertainty surrounding it. After months of skepticism due to potential financial issues and delays in the construction of the circuit, those doubts have now been resolved. Work on the track — including the grandstands and fan zones, which are expected to be luxurious — will begin in May.
The “Madridring,” as it has been nicknamed in reference to Austria’s circuit, is expected to be ready next year, and this has been confirmed by the city’s mayor, José Luis Martínez-Almeida. His words: “We have already launched a tender for the construction of the circuit. We will issue the license immediately after Easter, so the work should begin in May, in principle, to align with the 2026 calendar.”
New sponsors have made a significant difference. Just yesterday, a contract was signed with a joint venture between the Spanish company ACCIONA (60%) and the French firm Eiffage Construction (40%). These two companies will build the Madrid track in the area near Barajas Airport, close to the IFEMA trade fair center, and it is set to replace the Barcelona circuit — should the Catalan track’s contract not be renewed.
The mayor of Madrid also added: “After more than forty years, Formula 1 will return to Madrid with a street circuit, in line with the direction the sport is heading: more urban tracks. We presented this proposal, they accepted it, and so Madrilenians will finally be able to enjoy Formula 1 in 2026. The clearest proof that the event will take place is the start of construction this May.”
