Verstappen Leaving Red Bull: Aston Martin Ready to Strike?

by Walter Izzo

Is Max Verstappen really on the verge of leaving Red Bull? The Dutch driver could be just one step away from a sensational departure from the Milton Keynes-based team. What lies ahead for the four-time World Champion? Will it be Aston Martin or Mercedes?

This morning brought a major twist in the Formula 1 world: according to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Max Verstappen could soon part ways with Red Bull Racing. Although his contract officially runs through the end of 2028, it’s worth noting that certain clauses reportedly allow him to walk away as early as the end of the 2025 season—making a potential exit much more realistic.

Speculation around Verstappen’s dissatisfaction has been growing within the Red Bull camp. The departure of legendary designer Adrian Newey last year deeply disappointed the Dutchman. Tensions were further escalated by the isolation of his father, Jos Verstappen, following a heated dispute with Team Principal Christian Horner. Then came the controversial 2025 driver decision, in which Liam Lawson was assigned to the Visa Cash App team instead of Yuki Tsunoda—once again, against Max’s wishes and met with internal disagreement.

Another critical factor is the 2026 regulation change. While Mercedes exudes confidence about its prospects, Red Bull faces considerable uncertainty. Helmut Marko has openly expressed concerns over the development of Red Bull’s in-house power unit, pointing to significant technical challenges. For Max—who only races to win—such doubts may tip the balance, especially after securing four World Championships.

Aston Martin is currently viewed as the top contender to secure Verstappen’s signature in a blockbuster deal. Key advantages for the Silverstone-based team include the return of Adrian Newey, as well as the renewed partnership with Honda—both crucial elements Lawrence Stroll could leverage in negotiations.
