Fernando Alonso answered questions from journalists during a press conference — here’s what the Spaniard had to say.
It’s been a tough start to the season for Alonso who, after the first four races, has yet to score a single point — a rare occurrence for the two-time world champion. Aston Martin is clearly struggling, which perhaps was to be expected, given that the British team appears to be heavily focused (if not entirely) on the upcoming season — one that could, in theory, see Alonso alongside Max Verstappen.

Asked about the wild rumors linking Verstappen to Aston Martin, Alonso was quick to respond: “Verstappen a threat to me at Aston? I have a contract, but the fact that he’s being linked to our team is a positive sign. When a champion is associated with a project, it means that project has value. I plan to stay here for a long time, even once I’m no longer racing. Would I welcome him as a teammate? Of course — but I think it’s a rather unlikely scenario.”
Reflecting on the current season with Aston Martin, he added: “Celebrating 50 Grands Prix with Aston Martin is something I never would have imagined. We’ve been through a lot together, and today, as a team, we’re more prepared to fight for a world title. The results aren’t there right now — it’s a transitional period — but it’s in these very moments that we have to lay the groundwork to be truly ready to win when the opportunity comes. I’m enjoying being part of this team’s growth. It’s not a championship-winning team just yet, but it will be. Even after I stop racing, I want to keep contributing to its development.”
Looking ahead, 2026 is shaping up to be a whole new chapter — a true all-in for both Aston Martin and Alonso. Here’s how the Spaniard put it: “The 2025 cars are a natural evolution of last year’s, but the results aren’t much different from what we saw in the lone race at Abu Dhabi 2024. Next year will be a different story. Of course, you always want to finish a season on a high, and the motivation within the team is strong. Would I want Newey working on the current car? I believe he’s already focusing his efforts on 2026 — and if that’s the decision he’s made, I fully support it.”
