George Russell is experiencing the best start to a season in his career, and a contract renewal with Mercedes seems just around the corner.

The renewal with Mercedes seems very close, to the point that some international outlets already reported it as a done deal weeks ago — a contract extension through 2027 worth 30 million per year. However, no official announcement has been made yet, and during the Saudi GP weekend, Russell himself addressed the topic of his contract situation. Here are his words: “Rumors are never really that accurate, are they? When it comes to rumors, I don’t pay much attention. Some of them are somewhat believable, but at the end of the day, we’ve never actually discussed a contract before May or June…”
The Briton then added: “The strangest part is how many drivers seem to have long-term deals. I say ‘seem’ because everyone has exit clauses, everyone has performance-related clauses. If you have a three-year contract, it doesn’t really mean anything if there’s a clause like that — which can work both ways, for the driver and the team. If you have a contract with a team but they want you gone, they’ll definitely find a way to make that happen. That’s how this sport works, and honestly, that’s how it should work — because we’re 20 of the best drivers in the world and everything is ruthless. There’s no time for messing around.”
