Sebastian Vettel has no doubts when it comes to Max Verstappen, whom he describes as the strongest driver on the current grid—despite the RB21 not matching the performance of the MCL39
Vettel’s recent comments have sparked quite a stir. After staunchly defending Lando Norris—who has come under heavy media scrutiny for mistakes while driving the dominant McLaren—the four-time World Champion has now turned his praise towards the Dutchman. Following Verstappen’s spectacular qualifying performance in Jeddah, Vettel has named him as the favourite for the World Championship title.

This comes even though the entire paddock acknowledges that the RB21 is not the fastest car on the grid. The strength of the MCL39, with 4 wins out of 5 races this season, is well-known, and most of the top teams are pinning their hopes on Barcelona. At the Spanish Grand Prix, the new FIA directive on flexible wings will debut, potentially reshaping the aerodynamics of the current cars. From that point onward, the competitive balance could shift.
Seb’s words: “He’s the strongest of them all”
Max Verstappen’s talent is undeniable, and it’s hard to believe he still needs to prove himself. It is on this very foundation—rarely straightforward in a sport as hotly debated as Formula 1—that Vettel built his reasoning when speaking to Sky Sports UK:
” Max has incredible talent and has grown tremendously. The way he now approaches his races is completely different from before.”

So what’s Verstappen’s secret? Vettel has a clear view:
“He’s much more measured now—perhaps a reflection of past mistakes, even some against me—and the progress he’s made isn’t necessarily about raw lap times or outright performance, but rather consistency and reliability. He’s present in every race, and that’s what sets him apart at the moment”.
“He has excellent self-control, and in my view, that makes him the strongest driver on the grid right now. That blend of aggression and experience, combined with his natural speed, is truly impressive”. . Despite everything, could Max still be a real contender for the 2025 title? Can the skill of one driver overcome McLaren’s dominant strength? According to Seb, the answer is yes.
