George Russell gave an insightful interview to The Athletic ahead of the Miami Grand Prix.
George Russell is experiencing one of the best periods of his career, both in terms of performance and results. However, the race in Jeddah didn’t go according to Mercedes’ plans, with the young Brit having to settle for fifth place after finishing on the podium in three of the first four races of the season. The Miami Grand Prix represents an important opportunity to aim for his first win of the season and potentially close the gap in the drivers’ standings.

In an interview with The Athletic, Russell spoke about his journey with Mercedes, stating that if he had joined five years earlier, he would already have two world titles to his name. Here are the English driver’s remarks in detail: “Everyone is in Lewis’s shadow. Being teammates with a seven-time world champion for three years is not easy. In the past, if you finished ahead of Lewis Hamilton in a championship or a race, you likely would have won it. If I had been here five years ago, I’d have two championships to my name by now.
Now I’m continuing to work with the same group of engineers and mechanics. Of course, Lewis was such a big presence that you can feel he’s no longer here, but in the day-to-day running of things, nothing has changed—I’m still sitting at my desk in front of my computer, warming up in my room, getting into the car, and putting on my helmet. I want to be in control of my destiny above all else.”
