Argentinian driver Franco Colapinto might soon be back on the F1 grid, and a leaked moment from Argentina could be the clue that changes everything.
A hot mic incident may have prematurely revealed one of the most anticipated moments for Argentinian fans: Colapinto’s second debut in Formula 1, this time with Alpine. During an interview on Argentina’s A24 channel, Horacio Marín, CEO of oil giant YPF (Colapinto’s main sponsor), appeared to accidentally let slip a crucial detail.

The moment happened during journalist Eduardo Feinmann’s show, when he asked Marín twice about when Colapinto would make his official debut with Alpine. On camera, the executive gave a vague reply: “I don’t know.” However, once the interview ended and the microphone was still live, Marín could be heard saying just one word: “Imola.”
The unintentional leak quickly sparked attention from South American media and motorsport fans. The Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari will host the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix from May 17–19, making it a prime candidate for a rookie test or free practice session for Colapinto, who currently serves as Alpine’s third driver.
Who is YPF — The Backbone of Colapinto’s Career
YPF has been backing Colapinto since 2023 and is a key player in his journey to F1. The Argentinian oil company recently launched promotional campaigns for both the Imola and Barcelona Grands Prix — a potential sign of direct involvement in those races. Colapinto’s appearance at Monza last year was historic, marking Argentina’s return to the F1 paddock for the first time since Gastón Mazzacane raced in 2001.
With Jack Doohan still waiting for a shot at a full-time seat, Colapinto could become a surprise card in Alpine’s lineup. The coming weeks will be decisive in determining whether Marín’s off-air spoiler was just a slip — or a sign of what’s to come.
