Born in Dorfen, in Upper Bavaria, Mass was one of the prominent figures in Formula 1 during the 1970s and early 1980s. He competed in 114 Grands Prix between 1973 and 1982, driving for teams such as Surtees, McLaren, ATS, Arrows, and March. He secured one victory—at the 1975 Spanish Grand Prix—and eight podiums in his F1 career.

After leaving Formula 1, he found new success in endurance racing, winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1989 with a Sauber-Mercedes. One of his final public appearances was at the 2024 Monaco Historic Grand Prix.
