The Canadian Grand Prix has been extended until 2031, but recent reports cast doubt on the future of the Montreal circuit.
Canada may be dropped from the Formula 1 calendar starting next season, despite a significant contract renewal signed just a few months ago. According to reports from Montreal-based newspapers, there are serious issues surrounding the organization of future editions of the Canadian Grand Prix. As a result, this season’s race — the ninth round of the calendar — will be crucial for the future of the Montreal circuit.
The problems mainly stem from what happened during last season’s Grand Prix, which saw Verstappen take victory after an entertaining race that featured both wet and dry conditions. What’s worrying the event organizers — and especially Liberty Media — are various issues related to local infrastructure and the overall management of the race weekend.
Additionally, there appear to be economic shortcomings that could even lead to legal trouble for the organizers. In short, the situation for the Montreal circuit — which just months ago had strengthened its place on the F1 calendar through 2031 — is far from clear or promising. The extension, which added two years to the original agreement that ran through 2029, had been granted to make up for the two editions cancelled in 2020 and 2021.
The 2025 edition will therefore be crucial for the possible reconfirmation of this historic venue, but Formula 1 is looking to the future — and as seen in the case of Imola, history alone might not be enough.
