The debate over a possible return of V8 engines to Formula 1 continues, and Stefano Domenicali has thrilled fans with a response that leaves little room for interpretation.
Formula 1 is moving towards an increasingly sustainable future, but in the paddock at Imola — during FP3 of the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix — the debate over the heart of the cars, the engine, came back to life. The topic was reignited by Carlo Vanzini, the voice of Sky Sport F1, who provocatively asked Stefano Domenicali: “Can we start a petition to bring back the V8s in Formula 1?”

The context is no coincidence. In recent months, rumors and speculation have suggested growing dissatisfaction with the upcoming generation of V6 turbo-hybrid power units, set to debut in 2026. Despite the arrival of new manufacturers like Audi and Honda’s renewed involvement, many — both inside and outside the paddock — fear that increasing the electric component to 50% may damage the show, the sound, and the technical identity of Formula 1.
However, a meeting held in Bahrain confirmed that there will be no further regulatory changes for 2026, putting a damper on hopes of an early return to V8s.
Domenicali’s response fires up the fans: “Carlo, if you want…”
Still, nostalgia for the V8 era is not a taboo. Domenicali, interviewed by Mara Sangiorgio for Sky Sport F1, responded with a smile to Vanzini’s proposal:

“Look Carlo, if you want, I’ll be the first to sign it…” — admitted the Formula 1 CEO, suggesting that even at the highest level, there are those who still appreciate the charm of naturally aspirated engines.
He then brought the conversation back to the present. The Imola-born executive reaffirmed the relevance and necessity of the 2026 regulations, which will introduce hybrid power units made up of 50% internal combustion and 50% electric power — in line with the sport’s sustainability goals.
However, he also opened an important door: “We must start working right away on the next regulatory change,” which, according to the latest rumors, could hypothetically take place between 2029 and 2031.
