Yuki Tsunoda’s terrifying crash at Imola brings back memories of Rubens Barrichello’s dramatic 1994 accident: fear for the Japanese driver
There were frightening moments during Qualifying at the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix, as Yuki Tsunoda was involved in a heavy crash in Q1 that brought out the red flags. The Japanese driver, behind the wheel of his RB21, lost control exiting Turn 6, spinning off at high speed into the gravel.

The car flipped over after hitting the tyre barriers, bouncing back onto the gravel and landing upright. Fortunately, Tsunoda emerged unscathed from the wreck, although the impact looked severe and the car sustained significant damage.

Tsunoda’s scary moment draws comparisons to Barrichello in 1994
The crash inevitably evoked memories of another shocking incident at Imola: Rubens Barrichello’s horrifying crash during Friday practice in 1994.
The Brazilian lost control at the Variante Bassa and was left unconscious for several minutes following a violent impact. That crash marked the beginning of one of Formula 1’s darkest weekends, which saw the tragic deaths of Roland Ratzenberger and Ayrton Senna. Barrichello survived with bruises and minor injuries, but the scare remains one of the most serious of his career.
