Max Verstappen issues an apology on social media: “What I did shouldn’t have happened”
Max Verstappen has broken his silence after the contact with George Russell during the 2025 Spanish Grand Prix, taking responsibility for the aggressive move that ultimately compromised the end of his race. The Red Bull driver was handed a 10-second penalty and 3 penalty points on his super license, finishing 10th, just behind Fernando Alonso.

The Dutchman admits: “A wrong move, out of frustration”
On his Instagram account, Verstappen shared a message with fans and the team:
“We had an exciting strategy and a good race in Barcelona, until the safety car came out. Our tyre choice to the end and some moves after the restart fueled my frustration, leading to a move that was not right and shouldn’t have happened.”
He was referring to his attempt to re-pass Russell at Turn 5 — a moment where, after initially yielding the position, he ended up hitting the Mercedes driver.

Max’s admission: “Emotions can run high”
Verstappen reaffirmed his full commitment to the team, while also acknowledging that emotions can sometimes take over, as they did in this case:
“I always give everything out there for the team and emotions can run high. You win some together, you lose some together. See you in Montreal.”
