Sebastian Vettel to Return to Red Bull in 2026? The Possibility of Replacing Helmut Marko

by Walter Izzo

Sebastian Vettel’s potential return to Red Bull is a topic gaining traction in Milton Keynes, as Helmut Marko could bid farewell to Formula 1 at the end of 2025

A Vettel comeback at Red Bull would be sensational— though not behind the wheel. While there were rumors in recent months linking the four-time World Champion to Audi, recent speculation has increasingly positioned Vettel as the natural successor to Helmut Marko within the Red Bull organization.

Could Vettel Be Marko’s Heir at Red Bull?

Vettel and Marko have long shared a close personal and professional relationship, often spotted engaged in lengthy, albeit discreet, conversations. This is not the first time Vettel’s name has surfaced as Marko’s potential heir—and it likely won’t be the last. The rumors gained fresh momentum following Vettel’s recent interview, in which he openly reflected on the future and the nature of his ties with Red Bull.

Having clinched four consecutive world titles with the team, just as Max Verstappen is currently doing, Vettel has been considering a proposal that appears to go beyond mere speculation.

Why Seb? The reasons behind and his words

There are several factors that could support Vettel’s transition into a senior advisory role at Red Bull. With Helmut Marko increasingly hinting at stepping away from the sport due to age, a significant vacancy would open within the Red Bull leadership structure. It’s plausible that Marko himself would favor a successor who could bring fresh energy and perspective to the team. Christian Horner is also reportedly supportive of Vettel’s potential return—not just as a symbolic figure, but as someone capable of reshaping Red Bull’s vision beyond the racing team.

Sebastian Vettel is coming to Red Bull? A new idea for Helmut Marko’s role

In an interview with Austrian broadcaster ORF, Vettel commented:
I don’t know. I still have a great relationship with Helmut. We’re in touch about this, though maybe not in depth just yet. But it’s possible. We’ll have to see what form it could take. He’s said several times that he would retire, but he’s still here. I wish him all the best and hope he stays around for a long time “.

Vettel’s words point directly to the possibility of Marko stepping down at the end of his current contract. However, while many believe it ends in 2025, it actually runs through the end of 2026—coinciding with the debut of the next generation of Formula 1 cars. That has fueled speculation that Vettel could join Red Bull in an initial transitional role before formally taking over at the conclusion of the 2026 season.

Should this happen, it may only be the beginning of a larger reshuffle at Red Bull. Despite Christian Horner’s public statements denying any plans to leave before 2026, the ongoing turmoil at Ferrari and the uncertain position of team principal Frédéric Vasseur could trigger unexpected changes across the paddock.
