After the Lawson incident in the Sprint, Piastri also becomes a victim of a FIA miscalculation.
It’s been a hectic afternoon both on and off the track in São Paulo: after the earlier mix-up involving Liam Lawson and Ollie Bearman, the FIA found itself in another similar situation—this time concerning Oscar Piastri.
Despite an overall strong weekend of officiating, the Federation stumbled shortly after the Brazilian Grand Prix. The FIA initially stated that McLaren’s #81 driver had reached a total of 8 penalty points on his Super Licence following his collision with Antonelli and Leclerc during the Safety Car restart.
FIA’s mistake on Piastri: what happened
Despite an overall strong weekend of officiating, the Federation stumbled shortly after the Brazilian Grand Prix. The FIA initially stated that McLaren’s #81 driver had reached a total of 8 penalty points on his Super Licence following his collision with Antonelli and Leclerc during the Safety Car restart. However, a new official document later corrected the information: Piastri’s actual total is 6 points, not 8.
The contact in question occurred in the early laps of the race. Antonelli was running second, with Leclerc and Piastri close behind. Piastri attempted an overly ambitious move on the inside of Antonelli, causing slight contact and forcing the Mercedes driver wide—triggering a secondary collision with an innocent Leclerc.
Stewards deemed Piastri predominantly at fault, handing him a 10-second time penalty and 1 penalty point on his Super Licence. But in the initial official report, the running total was miscalculated, sparking confusion among teams and media.
The FIA later issued a revised statement correcting the error, confirming that Piastri stands at 6 penalty points in total.
This mistake comes just a day after a similar incident in the Lawson–Bearman case, where the New Zealander was also wrongly listed with 8 points before being corrected to 7. Errors happen—but it’s been a busy, chaotic, and thrilling weekend both on and off the track in Brazil.
