2026 Mercedes Engine: what has come to light

According to The Race, the Brackley team’s project was carried out with complete transparency. Every major technical decision, including the management of the compression ratio, was verified by the FIA. The interpretation of the 16:1 maximum limit was found to be compliant with the regulations.

Mercedes worked closely with the FIA throughout the entire process of defining the 2026 regulations. The measurement method established by the rules involves checks with the engine stationary and at ambient temperature, in the garage. This means that the official value is the one recorded under static conditions, not on track, where thermal expansion of the components can alter it.

For Mercedes, adhering to the rules as defined is sufficient. The FIA has confirmed, as reported by The Race, that the control methodology has not changed and that the engine fully complies with the limits. This is therefore not a margin to exploit, but a design that is fully within the regulations.

What happens next?

The situation puts the FIA in a delicate position. Rivals—Ferrari, Audi, and Honda—are demanding clarity on compliance with Article C1.5, which requires engines to conform at all times. On the other hand, Mercedes has invested millions in development while following the guidance of the federation’s engineers.

Changing the rules once the season has started—for example, by imposing dynamic checks based on on-track conditions—would be complicated and could lead to legal disputes. The FIA has already clarified that any potential modifications can only be considered in 2027, and always in a transparent manner for all teams.

According to The Race, for those who have not taken advantage of the compression limit, there are two options: develop upgrades to try to make up ground during the season, accepting that 2026 may be a transitional year, or file a formal protest. The latter option, however, carries real risks, as it would open a complex debate on on-track engine compliance and could drag the FIA into an extremely delicate confrontation.
