Helmut Marko on Lawson: “He Will Be One of Our Four Drivers in 2025”

by Nicola Lamberti

New Zealand driver Liam Lawson, who impressed with AlphaTauri in 2023, will occupy one of Red Bull’s seats starting in 2025

We’ve come to expect it: Helmut Marko is known for making statements that cause a stir, and today he once again made headlines. The Austrian has confirmed that Liam Lawson will be racing for Red Bull or Visa Cashapp RB in 2025. Lawson will take one of the four available seats in the Austrian team, replacing one of Tsunoda, Ricciardo, Perez, or Verstappen—the latter only in the unlikely event of a shocking departure to Mercedes.

Marko has shown considerable admiration for Lawson and, at the same time, little for Sergio Perez, which could pave the way for Lawson to secure a Red Bull seat. Tsunoda, however, might not be pleased, as he has consistently showcased his abilities and subtly criticized the higher-ups at the Milton Keynes team in front of the cameras.

A reunion between Liam Lawson and F1 is almost certain for the upcoming season

Sergio Perez has been confirmed for the second half of the season, despite contract clauses that allowed the team to replace him. This decision might not have sat well with Helmut Marko, who is not among Perez’s biggest fans. With the ongoing power struggle within Red Bull since early 2024, this situation could further intensify tensions.

Helmut Marko’s Words

“Lawson will be in one of our four cars in 2025.” The Austrian was clear: Lawson is fully part of Red Bull’s plans and will remain so in 2025, this time as a full-time driver. Marko also touched on the team’s recent performance: “In the last few races, we haven’t been performing up to our potential. In the Netherlands, qualifying is crucial, and together with McLaren, we are certainly among the favorites.”

Liam Lawson has already demonstrated his talent in F1, scoring points in multiple races with AlphaTauri and delivering strong performances despite limited laps in the car. There’s no doubt he is a talented driver, but will he be able to prove himself again after this season’s break?
