Suzuka 1991: How the GP Unfolded

At Suzuka Circuit, McLaren once again proved to be the car to beat. Off the line, Senna and Berger made a flawless start, keeping the lead ahead of Nigel Mansell, the only man still mathematically capable of challenging Senna for the title. But fate had other plans: on lap 10, Mansell made a crucial mistake at Turn 1, ran off the track, and retired from the race. From that very moment, Senna was World Champion — his third title in four years, following those of 1988 and 1990.

At the front, the race remained under McLaren’s control: Berger led, Senna managed the pace. Yet in the final moments came a gesture that would echo through the decades — Senna slowed down at the last corner, letting Berger take the victory, a sign of gratitude for his teammate’s support throughout the season.

The final podium saw Gerhard Berger on the top step, followed by Senna, Patrese, Prost, Brundle, and Modena — with Brabham scoring what would turn out to be the final points in its storied history.

For Ayrton Senna, Suzuka ’91 marked the absolute summit of his career: a showcase of mental strength and technical mastery that seemed destined to last forever — until tragedy struck on May 1, 1994, at Imola.
