Formula 1 returns this weekend with the Miami Grand Prix, the fourth round of the season. The Florida weekend will also be the first with the new changes made by the Federation to address several issues that have sparked negative comments from drivers and industry insiders regarding safety (given what happened in Japan) and the very nature of racing.
A series of meetings that also involved the drivers, as Alexander Albon explained. He stated: “I really like the fact that the FIA involves us in these discussions, and I wouldn’t say it’s always been this way in the past, perhaps because it wasn’t necessary. But for the most part, we give advice, we tell them what we think may or may not be in line with the spirit of the discipline, and they take that into account. Of course, they explain the bigger picture of the sport to us, and we understand it, so I think the more they involve us, the less we drivers get upset.”
The Williams driver then added: “We’ve been consulted; we like being involved because I think it’s an opportunity for us to have our say. For example, the regulation changes that were made in Miami largely came from conversations with the drivers and other things like that, so we’re positive about the changes; we’re happy. It’s going in the right direction. It’s probably not a permanent solution, but it’s going in the right direction.”
