During the Team Principals’ press conference, Fred Vasseur gave his opinion on the overtaking issue.
The topic of overtaking (artificial or otherwise) has been the subject of debate throughout the first month and a half of the championship. Opinions differed regarding the increase in competitive fighting within Grand Prix races and their authenticity given the disparity in electrical power between the cars involved in the various battles. During the Miami press conference, dedicated exclusively to TP, Fred Vasseur also expressed his opinion, siding with the new F1.
Here are the Frenchman’s specific comments: “I’m not that harsh on the first three races. Honestly, we’ve seen some good races, with lots of overtaking. You can say they feel a little artificial, but for me, they’re much less so than DRS. DRS was simply a matter of pressing a button, whereas now it’s about energy management, something that depends on the driver or the team. And it’s not artificial at all.”
Vasseur then added: “I’d say we definitely need to fine-tune the system and adapt. Thanks to the FIA, we’ve had the opportunity to discuss after each event to try to improve the system. It’s not easy to do that during the season. As for the future, we have several options on the table, and it will be time to discuss them soon. But from the beginning, we had one parameter in mind: reducing the exorbitant engine budget. And that applies to both manufacturers and customers. Now we can discuss all the options, and we will soon.”
