A car that changes colour depending on where it is: the most ambitious project of the season
For the 2026 Monaco Grand Prix, Aston Martin has unveiled one of the most ambitious liveries in recent F1 history. The project, created with partner Maaden, is called “From Rock to Racetrack” and represents the transformation from raw materials to cutting-edge technology through design.

A livery that changes colour on track
The core of the concept is an iridescent colour-shifting wrap applied to selected areas of the AMR26. The effect is striking: depending on light and angle, the car appears to change colour while driving through the streets of Monaco. Inspired by Aston Martin’s exclusive “Andromeda Red” finish, the material had to be carefully engineered to avoid adding weight or harming aerodynamics, so it was only applied to non-critical areas of the car.
As stated in the official release, bringing this idea to the grid was not simple: every additional layer of wrap means weight, thickness, and raised edges that can affect aerodynamic performance, which is why the iridescent material was applied only to the least critical areas of the car.

There was also an additional complication: the protective lamination that would normally make the wrap more durable would have compromised the colour effect. For this reason, the team developed special printing and application techniques to keep the material thin and lightweight while ensuring durability throughout the entire weekend.
“One of the distinctive elements of the design,” the statement reads, “is the use of hexagonal patterns across the entire car. Inspired by Maaden’s icon, the hexagons create an organic transition between Aston Martin Racing Green, black carbon surfaces, and the iridescent material. The pattern also solved a practical design issue: since traditional gradients could not be printed on the colour-shifting wrap, the hexagonal structure creates the illusion of shading and motion to the viewer.”

Over 100 pattern variations and around 30 visual concepts were produced before arriving at the final version, the one we will see in Monaco: it will not be an easy weekend for the AMR26… but the design is expected to be widely appreciated.
