Shocking Shwartzman: penalized on the grid but… he won’t be racing in F1!

What happened to Robert Shwartzman yesterday borders on the absurd: the Russian driver, if he ever debuts, will start five grid positions down in F1

Penalized before even making his Formula 1 debut—it sounds impossible, yet it happened just yesterday to Robert Shwartzman during the Free Practice 1 session of the Mexican Grand Prix.

The Russian driver, who holds an Israeli passport, is currently the third driver for Ferrari and Stake Sauber, a role that allows him to participate in occasional FP1 sessions during the year but has so far not granted him the chance to race in Formula 1.

Nevertheless, although he has yet to start from the F1 grid, Robert has already racked up a penalty: following FP1, an official FIA statement confirmed a five-place grid drop for the next GP he might participate in—if he ever debuts in Formula 1.

FIA statement on the penalty

Here’s what the FIA wrote: “Following a hearing, the stewards deemed Shwartzman to be in breach of Appendix H, Article 2.5.5 b) of the International Sporting Code for passing Yuki Tsunoda in the yellow zone while traveling at speed, leading them to impose a drop of five grid positions for the next race that Shwartzman participates in.”

“The penalty is the usual penalty for passing under a double yellow, and while the Stewards recognize that the driver is not scheduled to start the race, they have applied the consistent penalty”, the statement concluded.
