Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is now a Red Bull executive, and his words about Max Verstappen are full of praise
Learning from… Max Verstappen: that’s how one could summarize Jurgen Klopp’s recent comments. After eight and a half years as Liverpool’s manager, Klopp stepped down in May 2024 to take a break from football—or at least from coaching.
Last year, Klopp became Red Bull’s Head of Global Soccer—an unusual move and a unique role in the football world, especially for a coach of his caliber.
Now officially starting his new job, Klopp’s role will naturally focus on football, but Red Bull’s multi-sport universe will allow him to interact with many of the brand’s athletes, chief among them Max Verstappen, the four-time Formula 1 World Champion. According to Klopp, Verstappen may have a thing or two to teach him after agreeing to sit down for a conversation.
Red Bull’s senior advisor Helmut Marko has praised Klopp, calling him “an extraordinary coach and a great motivator,” adding that he wants Klopp to work with Red Bull drivers because “his experience and leadership could be decisive.” Strong words from Marko, a man known for his critical assessments, as the Milton Keynes team gears up for what’s expected to be a challenging 2025 season.
Throughout his career, Klopp has built a reputation as one of the most inspiring managers in football, thanks to his successes with Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool. In 2020, he led the Reds to their first Premier League title in 30 years. However, all of that pales in comparison when facing a legend like Max Verstappen.
Klopp on Verstappen
Speaking during his first press conference since taking on his new role, Klopp said: “There are so many things to talk about. Not just his concentration, but all sorts of things” , said the 57-year-old.
“Max is truly incredible. I’d love to spend time with him to understand how he manages to do what he does under the pressure of racing at 300 kilometers per hour while still maintaining his mindset at the highest level. Super interesting” , he concludes.
