According to early reports, Formula 1 may welcome the return of V10 engines starting from the 2029 season, while confirming the regulation changes scheduled for 2026.

This afternoon, an important FIA meeting took place to discuss the near future of Formula 1. At 11 a.m. local time in Bahrain, the top executives of the Federation met with various teams to address the shortcomings of the 2026 regulations and the potential comeback of naturally aspirated engines—an idea that, over the past weeks, has increasingly taken shape as a real possibility.

F1, the first rumors after the FIA meeting: naturally aspirated engines possible from 2029?

According to initial speculation, the V10 could make its return starting in 2029, giving teams three years to study and test the new engine components. The 2026 regulations will not be changed or scrapped, as many teams are already well advanced in the development of their new power units. Others—Mercedes being the most notable example—already feel very confident regarding their performance for the next era.

Given the impossibility of canceling the upcoming regulations, teams and the FIA reportedly discussed the reintroduction of naturally aspirated V10 or V8 engines using eco-friendly fuels starting in 2029—bringing the timeline forward by two years compared to previous expectations. Official statements from FIA members and the teams are expected in the coming hours, but for now, the leaked information appears to be highly reliable.
