by Stefano Zambroni

The Dutchman leaves Mercedes: the two-time virtual F1 world champion announces his departure from the British team.

One of the most prominent drivers in the Formula 1 Esports scene, Jarno Opmeer, has officially left the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Esports Team. Born in 2000, the Dutchman is the only driver, along with Brendon Leigh, to have won the virtual F1 drivers’ title more than once: both are tied with 2 titles, with Opmeer securing his victories in 2020 and 2021. However, the successful journey with Mercedes has come to an end, and the young SimDriver’s career awaits new developments.

The head of Mercedes Esports, Oli MacFarlane, said: “Jarno has been a huge part of the Mercedes Esports programme over the past three years and has given fans of SimRacing so many memorable moments.”

“His contribution to the double championship-winning season in 2021 is the absolute highlight. We wish Jarno all the best for the future and personally, I’d like to thank him for his hard work and dedication”, he concluded.
