F1, possible assistance for Honda: a waiver on engine upgrade rules under consideration to reduce the gap

Formula 1 is reportedly discussing a modification to the ADUO system to allow Honda to close the gap to its rivals in the new technical cycle

The partnership between Honda and Aston Martin has yet to yield concrete results. The 2026 season has begun with significant difficulties: amid vibration issues and a power unit that is still not fully understood, the Silverstone-based car has so far proven to be the least competitive on the grid. At present, Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll occupy the last two positions in the Drivers’ Championship, while Aston Martin shares the bottom spot in the Constructors’ standings with Cadillac, both still on zero points.

The possible ADUO rule change

For this reason, according to the report by The Race, Formula 1 is evaluating a modification to the ADUO system to allow Honda to recover ground on its rivals. The current regulations governing power unit upgrades stipulate that manufacturers can intervene on their engines based on specific performance deficit thresholds.

If the gap to the reference exceeds 2%, manufacturers are allowed one upgrade slot in 2026 and one in 2027. If the deficit is greater than 4%, they are granted two upgrade opportunities in 2026 and two more in 2027.

However, these benefits are not cumulative: once granted during the season, they cannot be awarded again, even if a manufacturer continues to lag behind in the pecking order. This is precisely the core of the discussion: the option being considered by the FIA, Formula 1, and engine manufacturers would be to remove, or at least relax, this restriction, allowing those who remain behind to receive additional development opportunities.

If the proposal were approved, Honda could receive new concessions, both in terms of upgrades and spending allowances, should it fail to close the gap to within 4% at the second evaluation window. To make the change effective, a qualified majority would be required: four of the five engine manufacturers, in addition to approval from the FIA and FOM.

The coming weeks will be crucial in determining whether the report will translate into a concrete regulatory change. If not, Honda will have to rely exclusively on its own resources to close a gap that, at present, appears far from negligible.
