The solution introduced by Ferrari quickly spread across the paddock: six teams have already copied it, and now the FIA is considering banning it from 2027
Technical innovations have always been one of the key driving forces in Formula 1. Over the years, several teams have managed to develop revolutionary ideas capable of going against the grain and reshaping the competitive balance on track.
Ferrari appears to have found a new technical weapon in the so-called FTM, the wing positioned in the exhaust area, first introduced during the pre-season tests in Bahrain and never removed from the car since. However, this latest aerodynamic frontier brought by the Scuderia could already have a short lifespan.
The FIA is considering a ban from 2027
The information comes from The Race, which reports that the FIA is carefully considering the possibility of banning the solution introduced by Ferrari starting from 2027. According to the British publication, the governing body has decided to intervene following the technical battle that has emerged around the rear-end area of the cars, with several teams attempting to develop similar interpretations of the concept pioneered by Maranello.
Ferrari’s idea has quickly set a trend: in Miami, six teams — McLaren, Mercedes, Red Bull, Williams, Alpine, and Cadillac — brought to the track an exhaust wing conceptually similar to Ferrari’s solution.
At present, the FIA considers these solutions fully legal. However, the governing body’s objective would be to act before this area of the car becomes the focus of a new technical arms race, avoiding a scenario in which the regulatory grey area identified by Ferrari pushes teams towards increasingly extreme developments.
For this reason, according to The Race, the FIA intends to open discussions with the teams to amend the technical regulations and permanently ban the use of exhaust wings starting from 2027.
