Tensions surrounding the new Madrid Formula 1 circuit continue to rise
Despite recent promotional videos featuring Carlos Sainz, the future “Madring” remains at the center of political and social controversy in Spain ahead of its Formula 1 debut in September 2026.

According to El País, one of Madrid’s leading newspapers, local residents are becoming increasingly frustrated. During Saturday’s protests, demonstrators reportedly shouted: “They are destroying our neighborhood.”And now, the matter has officially reached court.
Madrid City Council taken to court: here’s why
The controversy goes far beyond public protests. Madrid’s City Council is being accused of failing to carry out a proper environmental impact assessment, as well as allegedly lacking public health studies related to the project. Critics also point to the ecological damage caused by the removal of numerous trees around the area.

A court has already rejected a precautionary request to temporarily stop the construction works, stating that the accusations presented were considered “too generic.”
Another major issue concerns the financial management of the project. Citizens were originally promised a “zero cost” circuit for taxpayers, but reality appears to be very different. Private investment tenders reportedly failed, forcing IFEMA — the fully public institution behind the project — to take responsibility for financing the event.
According to reports, the total public costs could now amount to several hundred million euros. The situation is therefore creating an increasingly tense atmosphere in the Spanish capital ahead of the Grand Prix.

What about the construction delays?
Regarding delays in completing the circuit, FormulaPassion reports that the situation has improved compared to recent weeks, when fears of a possible cancellation of the 2026 GP had even emerged.
Construction reportedly continues at full speed, with hundreds of workers operating almost nonstop to complete the project in time.
