Alpine and Honda Fined by FIA due to Cost Cap’s violation Sanctions follow

Just ahead of the upcoming Brazilian Grand Prix weekend, Formula 1 faces another internal shake-up: last night, the FIA reportedly issued fines to two teams for breaching the Cost Cap regulations, the maximum spending limit allowed for each team. Ironically, the Budget Cap issue, along with team expenses, was recently highlighted by Toto Wolff after the Mexican Grand Prix, where he noted Mercedes’ challenges in staying within the permitted financial limits

The teams involved are Alpine and Honda, engine suppliers for Alpine, Red Bull, and Visa CashApp Racing Bulls. Alpine received a $400,000 fine, while the Japanese manufacturer Honda was fined approximately $600,000. The difference between the fines is due to Honda’s $600,000 fine being related to errors in the declaration of excluded and adjusted (extra) costs. In contrast, Alpine, fined $400,000, submitted documents with severe deficiencies and missed the final submission deadline. The period in question is the 2023 season, and the agreement reached between the FIA and the two manufacturers has been termed an “Accepted Breach Agreement.”

FIA Statement on Fines for Alpine and Honda

The FIA clarified the reasons and amounts of the fines imposed on Alpine and Honda in an official statement: “The Cost Cap Administration has offered both engine manufacturers an Accepted Breach Agreement (ABA) to resolve these matters, and both manufacturers accepted the offer“.

The Cost Cap Administration recognizes that both power unit manufacturers acted cooperatively and in good faith throughout the review process, providing timely additional information and evidence when requested. This is the first year of full implementation of the 2026 Financial Regulations for power units, and there is no accusation or evidence that Alpine or HRC sought or gained any undue advantage as a result of the breach”.

It is important to note that this event, as well as the agreement reached regarding the fines, will not impact the standings of Red Bull, VisaCashApp RB, or Alpine. They may continue their season as planned, albeit under increased scrutiny from both the paddock and the FIA.
