Mexico City E-Prix: what to know about the first event of 2025?

by Matteo Piva

Formula E returns to the track this weekend after its debut in São Paulo: schedules, stats, and fun facts about the Mexico City E-Prix.

After about a month of waiting, Formula E is back on track for the first event of 2025, set to take place this weekend at the Hermanos Rodriguez circuit in Mexico City. The race will feature a modified layout compared to the traditional Formula 1 configuration, with a total length of 2.630 km.

The Mexico City E-Prix will be the second race of Season 11, marking the debut season of the GEN 3 EVO cars. This follows the thrilling São Paulo E-Prix, which ended with Mitch Evans’ victory after a series of dramatic twists up until the final laps. The New Zealand driver from Jaguar managed to climb back from the last spot on the grid, aided by two red flags that neutralized the race.

Mitch Evans is therefore leading the drivers’ standings with 25 points from his victory, while, surprisingly, NEOM McLaren tops the constructors’ standings for the first time since entering the category, thanks to the 27 points earned in Brazil. The papaya team had a challenging start to the race, with both Taylor Barnard and Sam Bird receiving drive-through penalties. However, the red flag neutralization, combined with excellent energy management, facilitated their comeback, finishing in third and fourth positions.

For the first time in its young history, NEOM McLaren leads the Formula E Constructors’ Championship.

Mexico City E-Prix: The History

The Mexico City E-Prix has been a staple on the Formula E calendar since Season 2, which was won by Jérôme D’Ambrosio, who is currently the vice Team Principal of Scuderia Ferrari in Formula 1. However, the last three editions have been dominated by cars with Porsche powertrains, with two victories from Pascal Wehrlein and one from Jake Dennis of Andretti.

The reigning world champion secured his first Formula E victory in Mexico in 2022, and repeated the feat in 2024 after a dominant weekend. In the 2023 edition, however, the star of the race was Jake Dennis, driving the Andretti car equipped with a Porsche powertrain. He won with more than a 7-second lead over second place, which was occupied by Pascal Wehrlein’s Porsche.

With three podiums in Mexico, equal to the German driver, is Lucas Di Grassi, while the record is held by Sébastien Buemi with four. The Swiss driver finished the São Paulo E-Prix in seventh place and will aim to return to the podium after securing second place in 2024. The Brazilian driver, on the other hand, after retiring in Brazil, has set his sights on earning the first points for the Lola team in Formula E.

Mexico City E-Prix: Pascal Wehrlein’s Physical Condition

The São Paulo E-Prix was primarily marked by the terrifying crash involving reigning world champion Pascal Wehrlein. The German driver made contact with Nick Cassidy’s Jaguar, and after hitting the wall, his Porsche flipped over, with the Halo device performing its crucial safety function. Despite the violent impact, the German driver did not suffer any serious physical injuries, as confirmed by the medical checks he underwent.

On the official channels of the Tag Heuer Porsche team, Pascal Wehrlein stated: I’m pleased to be able to drive again in Mexico because the accident in Sao Paulo was a serious one and I came away from it with a few injuries. The festive season has helped me to recover, allowing me to go on the attack again”

Therefore, the German driver will take part in the Mexico weekend as scheduled, alongside his teammate Antonio Félix da Costa, in an effort to extend Porsche’s dominance on this track.

Pascal Wehrlein was involved in a terrible crash in Brazil; fortunately, the German driver will be able to participate as scheduled in the upcoming Mexico E-Prix.
