FIA Sparks Debate Again. GPDA President on the New Regulations: “We Read Everything Through the Media”

by Letizia Ganci

The GPDA President has spoken out about the FIA’s new regulations, which introduce penalties for the use of foul language by drivers, enforceable during the 2025 season.

During the past season, the FIA was at the center of numerous controversies. Beyond the departures of several high-profile figures within the organization, the governing body made headlines by penalizing drivers—including Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc—for using inappropriate language that could damage the Federation’s image. Recently, the FIA has taken a proactive approach by setting clear regulations regarding the penalties drivers may face in the upcoming season for making harmful statements. The new sanctions, outlined in Appendix B of the FIA International Sporting Code, include not only hefty fines but also suspensions and points deductions.

As reported by RacingNews365, GPDA President and former Formula 1 driver Alex Wurz addressed the matter. When asked whether drivers had been consulted before the new penalties—listed in Appendix B of the International Sporting Code—were officially implemented, he responded: “No, there was no consultation. We read everything through the media. There is definitely room for improvement in how the FIA and GPDA collaborate on these matters.”

If we compare it to, for example, the NFL in America, players are unionized and involved in the process. In this case, we are not involved. I am not sure if the FIA has consulted its own internal drivers’ commission—that I don’t know. Let’s just hope that not too many fines will be issued ” The Austrian then continued by comparing what happens within the National Football League (the American football association) to the dynamics of Formula 1.

Finally, Wurz revealed that he has not yet discussed the new regulations with the drivers, who are currently in a very busy period as they prepare for the season opener in Melbourne: “The drivers are in a very busy period, and I don’t want to stress them. The rules are already in place. This isn’t something we can change overnight. Of course, we will meet, discuss, and decide on the best course of action.” When asked about a possible solution, Wurz concluded: The best solution? Don’t swear. Simple“.
